There were two influences for this painting. The primary one was to paint a self portrait of myself wearing a mask. See the band Pussy Riot. The technique of using sgraffito is a reference to Isle of Wight potter Jo Lester.

I had not anticipated that this painting would survive and just painted it instinctively but sometimes a painting is just successful and so this one proved.
